The others joined them. “You know,” said Gabe, “there was a time I thought a wild night was just indulging in too much kinky sex.”
“Is there such a thing?” asked Holmes with a grin.
“I don’t know,” said Roark. “Let’s go home to our wives and find out.”
They loaded back into the SUV and headed back to Chelsea. It was hard to believe that for the rest of the world, little time had passed at all from the time they had heard the thirteenth chime until now. Dawn was a long way off.
Corinne was curled up next to Eddy. “Hey?” she said softly. “Can I hear some of that mushy stuff?”
“I thought you didn’t like it.”
“I changed my mind.”
“I love you,” he said nuzzling her neck,
“I love you more,” she said with a sigh, knowing it was true.
Time. They would have more time. He would no longer need to return to London to train the Sentinel of the Portal. She had risen to the challenge and sealed not only the portal, but with the help of the Protector, they had banished his oldest enemy into her own demon dimension. He could feel the tendrils of crystal wrapping around his legs, stealing away his ability to move and immobilizing him. Time. It was the one thing that would continue on until he was needed again.

The night was upon him. Tremayne could feel the shackles of the curse releasing their stony hold on him. For more than five centuries, Holden Tremayne had been confined to his own personal hell. There were times Tremayne could see a kind of poetic justice in damning him to a half life where he only lived during the darkest hours of the night while most others slept. It was then and only then that the granite cracked, crumbled and fell away, releasing him once more into the world.
But it was a world that had changed vastly from the time before. Before he had been cursed and damned to hold an eternal vigil through unstaring eyes, he had been one of the privileged. He’d lived as he pleased. The son of the Duke of Cornwall, his days had been filled with fighting, drinking and wenching, activities in which he had excelled. It was the last of those behaviors that had damned him to the existence he now endured.
The girl had been a tavern wench, nothing more than a casual dalliance—a one-time thing to ease the lust that was riding him hard after a day of hunting and drinking with his friends. He hadn’t forced her to his bed, nor had he known she was a virgin until he shattered the shield of her maidenhood as he thrust up into her.
Six months later she’d appeared outside the castle walls, standing on the cliff as the wind off the ocean roared its fury with what he’d done. When Holden had refused to marry her—after all, he might have been the first, but he wasn’t the last—she had backed to the edge of the precipice, extended her arms out to her sides and simply tumbled backward to her death.
That night her elder sister had appeared, lighting a great bonfire in the same spot. As the flames had spit and crackled, dancing with the stars and the storm that swirled all around her, she pointed to Holden and called:

You who dimmed the light that shone
Shall be forever cast in stone
To watch by day
And live by night
Your cursed life can only be undone
When your devotion to the Light has begun
Then the tower of fire seemed to explode, and when it settled again to nothing more than a beacon of light, the witch had disappeared.
